To the Missionaries of the Great Texas Houston Mission,
What a wonderful weekend we've enjoyed listening to the Lord's anointed servants provide inspired counsel to us. How wonderful to hear messages about the importance of the family and the promise of eternal families found in the blessings of the temple. These are the messages we have been sharing as we work with our investigators and less actives. It is such a privilege to be able to listen to these messages and receive a witness of the Holy Ghost that the message is true. The Lord has said "whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same" (D&C1:38).
We were particularly struck by the number of messages directed to missionaries. Elder Kevin W. Pearson made several remarks that we thought were particularly beneficial in light of some of the recent messages we have shared with you. He stated, "Two of Satan's most powerful tools are distraction and deception." He went on to say that, "casual obedience and lukewarm commitment weaken faith."
We are pleased to report that our collective obedience and faith are increasing and as it increases, so do the miracles we see. In your mission call letters you were told that, "you have been recommended as one worthy to represent the Lord as a minister of the restored gospel...as such, you will be expected to maintain the highest standards of conduct and appearance by keeping the commandments, living the mission rules, and following the counsel of your mission president." It goes on to promise you that to the degree you can do "these things, the Lord will bless you and you will become and effective advocate and messenger of the truth." The bottom line Elders and Sisters is that your success in fulfilling your missionary purpose is directly related to your exact obedience.
We hope that each of you will bind yourself to act according to the revelation receive by Apostles and Prophets previously given to you as well as to that which you received this weekend. We promise you that as you do, the very powers of heaven will be yours and you will be blessed in ways you never imagined.
We love you and a consider it a wonderful honor to serve with you!
Love,
President and Sister Mortensen
